Spencertown Academy Classical Sunday Series Presents Tenor Brian Giebler with Pianist Steven McGhee May 4

Spencertown, New York–Spencertown Academy Arts Center Classical Sunday series presents tenor Brian Giebler with pianist Steven McGhee on Sunday, May 4 at 3:00pm at the Academy’s Blanche Grubin Auditorium. The program will include American and British composers Benjamin Britten, John Ireland, Gerald Finzi, Samuel Barber, William Bolcom, and Michael Head as well as Clarice Assad, Gabriel Fauré, and Richard Strauss, all featured on his recently released albums “A Lad’s Love” and “A Dad’s Love.” General admission tickets ($25 public, $20 Academy members, $10 students) are available via www.spencertownacademy.org.

“It should be noted that the recital will draw from Giebler’s latest albums, which explore the emotional journey of becoming a parent in song,” says Jan Douglas, member of the Academy Music Committee and head of Classical Sunday programming. “It is a very eclectic group of composers, with a world premiere from Clarice Assad, that should make for a creative and introspective recital.”

Brian Giebler is a highly acclaimed tenor who has appeared in major halls in New York and throughout the States, as well as in many international venues. His debut solo album, “A Lad’s Love,” which was created in collaboration with pianist Steven McGhee, garnered high praise from Gramophone, Opera News, and San Francisco Classical Voice, and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album. Highlights of his 2024/25 season include debuts with the Colorado Symphony and Austin Symphony (Orff “Carmina Burana”), Handel “Messiah” with the Asheville Symphony, a concert version of Handel “Theodora” with Ars Lyrica Houston, and return engagements with Voices of Ascension (Evangelist in Bach “St. Matthew Passion”), Princeton Pro Musica (Haydn “Creation”), and as Matthew Shepard with Conspirare in Craig Hella Johnson’s “Considering Matthew Shepard.”

Steven McGhee is part of the creative fabric of southeastern Michigan, serving as a collaborator, music director, and educator. In addition to working with Giebler, he’s collaborated with opera singers Christine Goerke, Jonathan Lasch, Caitlin Lynch, Kyle Stegall, and Leann Schuering. For ten years, he served as music director for Opera MODO’s innovative, site-specific productions performed all over Detroit.

This program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
