To cut, is a process we use over and over again in our daily lives. It has many different meanings and can be both a verb and a noun. Cut can mean to pierce sharply; to divide into parts, to reduce, to stop or to make a sudden shift. It can also mean to remove or exclude from something larger or to make a design in a particular way. The six local artists exhibiting each use cutting as an integral role in creating their own unique artistry.

Sunday, July 29 Workshop: Invisible Made Visible 10:00am- Noon. No charge. Pre-registration is required.

Artist Melissa Sarris will offer this hands-on embroidery workshop in conjunction with They Made the Cut show in the Gallery. Men from Green Haven Correctional facility were asked to respond to questions about how they see themselves and to allow the outside world to see their humanity and potential. Sarris took their hand written responses and enlarged and printed them on linen fabric. In the upcoming workshop participants are invited to embroider these words. Embroidery stitches will be taught. An informal conversation on the topic of mass incarceration will be encouraged. All materials will be provided (donated by Up-Stitch, Albany, NY). This workshop is limited to 10 participants. Sunday, July 1, 2018 A Workshop in Habitat Design 9:00am-Noon. $65 Academy members, $75 nonmembers

The workshop, led by Linda Horn and Heather Grimes, will begin at Linda Horn’s restored, native habitat, Spencertown property and will study the design of the landscape around the house, the plant choices that were made for diversity and the nature of the maintenance involved. June 23-July 15, 2018 Second Annual Regional Juried Photo Show

This impressive exhibit exemplifies the deeply personal process of creating art in all its forms.

Saturday, June 16, 2018 Garden Market on the Green 2018 9:00am-3:00pm

A lovely outdoor marketplace held on the Spencertown village green in conjunction with the Hidden Gardens event. This year’s market will showcase more than a dozen vendors offering plants, home and garden furnishings, birdhouses, antiques, garden books, and expert garden advice. Shoppers will find bargains on choice garden items and accessories at the Academy’s White Elephant Booth. Food vendors will offer varied and delicious sustenance. The aim of the market is to offer the rare and the unexpected at affordable prices. Admission is free and a portion of all sales benefit the Academy.

Celebrate the art of the garden with us, events designed to inform and inspire. This year our self-guided garden tour will feature a collection of private gardens located in Red Rock and New Concord. Back on the tour this year by popular demand, we also include the gardens at Steepletop, the home of 20th century American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. The tour will take place rain or shine. In the gardens of Meg and Bill Stratton’s elegant 1845 Greek Revival home at 5178 Route 7 in the heart of Spencertown, new friends meet and old ones greet at this festive kick-off to the summer season. Friends and neighbors paired with delicious food and libations, all served up in a bucolic setting. That is the recipe for the annual Twilight in the Garden Party on Friday, June 15. Cocktails, sparkling beverages, hors d’oeuvres and a scrumptious light supper are served. Tickets are now available.
