DUSTIN/REYNOLDS
Two
artists explore ideas about architecture in painting and sculpture.

Curated by Gwenn Mayers and Linda Horn
 February 18 through  March 26, 2006

DUSTIN/REYNOLDS, a show of painting, drawing and sculpture inspired by architecture by James Dustin and Scott Reynolds, organized by head curator Gwenn Mayers and Linda Horn, brings together two artists who share curiosity about architecture and the aesthetics of structure and form.

James Dustin investigates "the principles of pure space, unencumbered by the architectural considerations of daily use." Dustin fabricates small, architectural pavilion models that capture the play of light and shadow on their surfaces. He photographs these models in a landscape, then uses the photographs as the basis for his paintings and drawings.

Some of the works in this show were created when the artist had a studio in Brooklyn and thus evoke the cityscape of New York. Newer works, created after Dustin’s move to rural Greene County, NY incorporate meadow and mountain views of the Catskills framed by the pavilion models.

Scott Reynolds combines ideas from architecture, American history, pop culture and psychology into three-dimensional line drawings he calls "sculptural fictions." Reynolds grew up in Lansing, Michigan and was influenced by Rust Belt architecture and suburban sprawl. His sculptures playfully and critically explore what he calls, "the suburban state of mind and its structural environment."

Many of Reynolds' works have an industrial undertone revealing the structural parts – delicate inner and outer wood skeletons support or attach to inflated fabric elements; some hum with the background noise of fans that fill the shapes with air.

James Dustin was raised in New Hampshire and received a BFA from the Maine College of Art. Recent solo exhibitions include the Knoxville Museum of Art (TN), Herter Art Gallery at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) and the University Art Gallery, Indiana State University (Terre Haute).

His works are in many private collections throughout the country, and corporate collections including: American International Group; Brooklyn Union Gas; MassPort; Scudder, Stevens, Clark; Standard & Poors; and Tishman-Speyer Properties.

Scott Reynolds lives and works in New York City where he is an assistant professor at Pratt Institute. He lectures frequently at colleges and universities throughout the country. He is a recipient of the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, as well as other honors. The New York Times critic Ken Johnson describes Reynolds’ work as "animated by an antic, hyper-intellectual wit."
