Anthony Garner

Wood sculptor Anthony Garner will exhibit three pieces from a group of work, all representing an intuitive and immediate approach to materials at hand. He strives to achieve art that educates perception and encourages contemplation, as represented in his pieces of antique wood and spalted beech included in the exhibition. A practicing architect, Mr. Garner has taught at the School of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, and the School of Architecture, Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, among others. Roland Ginzel

Fulbright artist Roland Ginzel, whose work is included in selected collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, Dallas Museum of Art, and Purdue University Gallery, among others, will exhibit a sculptural wall piece entitled “Confluence.” Described as a sculpture at the intersection between organic and imagistic, the wood and acrylic piece is representative of the seasoned, non-objective sculptor whose artistic career has spanned over five decades. Mr. Ginzel recently participated in “Art in the Abstract” at Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery, and “That 70’s Show: The Age of Pluralism in Chicago” at the Northern Indiana Arts Association, Munster, Indiana.

Terrence Lavin
Terrence Lavin participated in the invitation-only International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition featuring noted sculptors from around the world who meet the exhibit’s challenges of space and scale dictated by the size of a shoebox. Mr. Lavin’s Shoebox sculpture “Vector Tranquility” combining mixed metals, carved stone and enamel will be among his works on exhibit at the Spencertown Academy. An Assistant Professor of Art at Southern Connecticut State University, he is the recipient of a 2006 State of Connecticut Artist Fellowship Grant.

Roger Phillips
Roger Phillips is considered a constructivist sculptor, whose many pieces have been commissioned for specific outdoor sites in both private and public collections. A large portion of his work is kinetic, made of stainless steel, and brightly painted aluminum plate. On display at the Academy will be two outdoor pieces and one indoor piece accompanied by a maquette or small model, and related artist’s drawings. Mr. Phillips’ work has appeared locally at Bard College, the Hudson Opera House, Chesterwood in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and at Weber Fine Art, Chatham, New York.

Victoria Palermo
Sculptor Victoria Palermo has an interest in the relationship between built and the natural environments. Using grass, moss, and natural rubber, she creates furniture and abstract sculpture, encouraging viewers to think about dualities that exist in natural and human-made surroundings. In addition to participating in Considering Materials, she will lead the Academy’s Gallery talk on April 29 at 2:00 p.m. Ms. Palermo teaches sculpture at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the Capital Region and has been included in many group exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, as well as internationally.

Joy Taylor
Wood in its manufactured and natural forms is the foundation for Joy Taylor’s bristly sculptures in toothpicks and matches. Over the past 17 years, Ms. Taylor’s work has appeared in nearly 50 solo, two-person and juried exhibitions throughout New York State. Her public commissions include works for the MTA Arts for Transit Programs, the Sculpture Space in Utica, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in New York.
